Monthly Lunch – Wed 10 Jan 24

Hi All and Happy New Year,

Lunch is booked for next Wed 10 Jan at 12.30 in the Bistro of the RACV Club 501 Bourke St Melbourne.

As always good humour, smart casual, camaraderie  and around $45 is the aim.

This is the first lunch of 2024 and it is reasonable that we re-visit the Rules of Engagement. See below.

Please advise attendance by COB on Monday 8 Jan please to bctcooper@gmail.com.

OTU Vic Monthly Lunches- Rules of Engagement

Introduction

As 2024 begins and our first lunch for the year is about to occur I thought it might be useful to revisit our ‘Rules of Engagement’ for the lunches.

We have tried to keep the cost of our lunches to about $45 per head ( less for non- drinkers)  but this has not always been easy as on a number of occasions some individuals have chosen to rack up about $58-$60 in costs and then simply pay the $45. Clearly this is unfair and frankly unacceptable. None of us attend to sponsor others, we all share equally.

The aim is for us to enjoy others’ company, build our very long friendships and “keep the blokes together”. The aim is not to dine at the top end of the menu, that can be done at your own leisure. So, some rules are necessary.

Rules

The following has been in place and will continue:

  • We order one course under $30
  • We order house red or white wine at $29 per bottle.
  • We allow for a coffee or tea to finish off.
  • We bring cash to cover the lunch- no-one has the time to wait for anyone to head off to an ATM. Please bring at least $50 with you.
  • The person doing the accounting for lunch should not have to monitor what you have, we tend to allow non-drinkers to pay around $35.
  • The RACV Club does not take cash, so whoever is collecting and paying does so with their credit card and then has to bank the cash.
  • A detailed costing and report on each lunch is provided to me so that we can manage any pool.

Costs

It is important to realise the costs associated with lunch and how we arrive at the figure needed;

  • Main course kept to $30, there are plenty of choices that include; Caeser Salad $20, Club Sandwich $24, Wagyu Burger $30, Angus beef Burger $28, while entrees Thai Beef Salad $22 and Salt and Pepper Calamari is $21. Unfortunately the fish and chips dish is $36!
  • Beer- costs, Zero Heinekin $7, Crown lager $10, James Boag $9
  • House red and white- $29 per bottle so a glass is let’s say $5
  • Soft drinks- L,L& Bitters=$4, except for Capi Sparkling water which is  $9 per bottle ( why we drink tap water)
  • Tea and coffee tend to come in at $4-$4.50, Hot chocolate is $5.

So, if you have a $30 meal, 1 x beer, and coffee that’s $45. Have a glass or two of wine and that rapidly becomes $55!

If you are a non-alcohol drinker and have a $30 meal soft drink and tea/coffee there is $38 or thereabouts.

Conclusion

We all attend these lunches when we can to spend time with similarly minded mates.

Can we all comply with these rules and not cause any unnecessary embarrassment.

Cheers

Brian Cooper
