Volunteered for National Service to get out of school teaching. Entered with class 1/67. A week before graduation, I wrote Infantry, Infantry, Infantry as my three corps preferences. I was offered a Corporal in Infantry or the option to graduate into Infantry with 2/67. I accepted the latter, spent another 3 months at OTU and was posted to 6RAR. I subsequently extended my NS by 18 months to complete a full tour of duty in Vietnam with 6RAR/NZ(ANZAC) as Tracker Platoon Commander. I ended my military career by spending 2 years in 1 Commando Coy (CMF) doing all the special warfare courses.
