Paul Norman Young was born in Gosford, NSW, on 28 November 1946. He completed his secondary education at Normanhurst Boys High School in the ‘upper north shore’ Sydney suburb of Normanhurst. He found employment as a Clerk with Australian Consolidated Industries (ACI) Ltd.
Called up for National Service, Paul commenced Recruit Training at the 1st Recruit Training Battalion (1 RTB), Kapooka, as 2786860, on 19 April 1967. Selected for officer training Paul commenced at the Officer Training Unit Scheyville with Class 2/67 on 12 May. He was allocated to Corporal Trevor Hurst’s 15 Section in Sergeant Lynton Day’s 5 Platoon, B Company. His platoon was in Hut B5, the uphill hut second from the Parade Ground. Paul was in Room 8. His ‘Father’ was Officer Cadet W. Lindemans (Room 7) who did not graduate. Paul’s classmates were Ernie Batchelor (Room 5) and Tony Houseman (Room 9), along with Ian Paton (Room 12), who graduated with Class 3/67. In his Senior Term, Paul remained in 15 Section, 5 Platoon, as the Section Commander under Sergeant Charlie Koch. Paul graduated with his class on 8 October 1967, was allocated to the Infantry Corps and posted to 3rd Training Battalion (3 TB), Singleton. On 26 June 1968 he was posted to the Infantry Centre where he saw out his National Service, discharging on 18 April 1969.
The 2002 OTU Directory had Paul living in Cremorne and working in the Hospitality Industry as a Company Director with Eagle Catering Equipment P/L based in Crows Nest. He stated that he was ‘Healthy, happy and fit’. He did not list a ‘Partner’.
From the 40th Anniversary, 8 October 2007, reunion booklet: ‘On Discharge I rejoined my pre-Army employer ACI. I then followed a girlfriend to the USA and with travel my passion I stayed away for about two years, tasting as many cultures as possible. I put aside the corporate dream to go into own business in 1978 and have enjoyed the good and bad of being your own boss. My Company is Eagle Food Systems P/L, commercial Kitchen & Bar Installations.
‘During many years in hospitality Industry have had opportunity to travel, meet interesting people and try new ideas. The company has been involved with projects in a creative way and has often called in as consultants. Projects have ranged from Fijian Islands to historic buildings to the local Pub.’
In the last years of his life Paul, who was still living at Cremorne, battled dementia, finally succumbing on 9 October 2024. He left behind his partner Carolyn and a son a from previous marriage.
