Desmond William McKenzie was born in Victoria on 15 March 1945. Before entering the Army as National Serviceman 3788968, Des was a Police Constable with Victoria Police. Having deferred his service, Des commenced at 2 RTB on 20 April 1966. He was selected for officer training and commenced at OTU with C Class (below), Class 2/66 on 6 May. In his Senior Term, Des was appointed as the Platoon Sergeant for 5 Platoon, B Company. He graduated with his class on 29 September. Des was allocated to the Service Corps (RAASC) and undertook Corps Training at the RAASC Centre. On 27 June 1967 he was posted as Officer Commanding 104 Transport Platoon.
Des completed his National Service on 19 April 1968 and returned to Victoria Police. He married Frances Jeanette, known to all as Jenny. After 18 years, having reached the rank of Sergeant in the Traffic Operations Group, Des retired from Victoria Police.
Des died in Melbourne on 26 May 2016 and was buried at the Northern Memorial Park in the Melbourne suburb of Glenroy on 1 June. He will be remembered as a proud, fair man and a loving husband.
